Woodfuel Information Events open for bookings
A series of woodfuel information events being held across the region are now open for bookings. The first event is being held in Gloucestershire on 24th October 2007, and subsequent events are being held in Bristol, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall in the coming months. The events will provide information about the south west woodfuel market, the opportunities being created, as well as guidance on woodfuel production, processing, transport and sale. The day will also include machinery demonstrations and a chance to quiz experts and companies already involved in the woodfuel industry. The events are being delivered by Forest Fuels as part of the larger South West Bioheat Programme, an initiative managed by Regen SW and funded by The South West RDA and The Forestry Commission. Full details of the events can be found at www.southwestwoodshed.co.uk

Wood 4 Energy, 10.00-4.00 Saturday 29-Sunday 30 September
Are you one of the people who have vowed to reduce your carbon footprint? Have you toyed with the idea of moving partially or fully to some form of wood fuelled heating, cooking or boiler? Would you like to know more about the mysteries of pellets as a fuel or other types of biofuel? Are you building a new house and looking towards alternative and sustainable ways of heating it? If so, come along to the Wood 4 Energy weekend to be held during the last weekend in September at the South West Burning Centre, Winkleigh.
Over the two days experts will be on hand to give general advice about all types of heating and range cooking, to help explore the best solutions to individual problems or situations.
As well as staff from South West Woodburning Centre, Flue and Chimney Specialists and Solid Fuel Appliance Spares, other companies join the event to bring a broad base of green heating options.
Treco Green Heat will be giving advice on accumulator tanks – a new type of hot water storage tank which can retain heat for prolong periods and therefore requires far fewer periods of combustion. Treco are also experts in wood pellet stoves, a technology relatively new to the market, but one which is growing in popularity. The pellets are cylinder shaped pencils, approximately 2 cm long, made from processed wood. Their size makes them flexible, both to store and use. This permits functions such as automatic feeding of the boiler, whereas traditional logs need to be added manually.

Come and meet South West Woodfuels at
WoodFair South West 2006 Roadford Lake, Okehampton
• Sat 8 and Sun 9 July 2006 Woodfair
About the Event
Building on the successful piloting of the event by South West Forest
over the past 5 years, Woodfair South West will hold its annual Woodfair
in the stunning setting of Roadford Lake. Last year, over 140 exhibitors
and 5 000 visitors attended. This year, the event has been extended to
two days and covers the whole of the South West region. The aim of the
event is to promote the wide ranging use of wood, woodland and woodland
products to people in the South West. There will be a variety of exhibitors
from throughout the woodland and forestry sector plus local craftsmen,
food producers, environment and conservation groups and tourism organisations.
The event boasts a full entertainment and demonstration programme, activities
for all the family and keenly contested woodworking competitions. Woodfair
Ethos To showcase opportunities associated with woodlands in the South
West to a wide range of audiences within a framework of rural regeneration.
The Woodfair provides a learning and leisure environment for all ages
whilst offering a key commercial opportunity for small and medium sized
rural-based businesses. Woodland issues are at its heart and the temptation
to include non-woodland related commercial retail and general amusements
frequently associated with large public shows will be resisted. The events
will aim to be a celebration of the rural scene and woodlands’ place within
it; opportunities for enhanced networking are considerable. Entry tickets
price levels and the use of concessions will be deliberately set to encourage
families and be fully inclusive. The desire to actively share information,
experience and best practice with others is a fundamental part of the
proposal’s ethos and planning.

Biomass Installations for Farms and Estates
March 15th, 2006
Wednesday 15th March 2006 at Loyton Lodge, Morebath, near Tiverton, Devon
EX16 9AS
Cost: £25.00 10.00 am – 3.30 pm including lunch and refreshments
Throughout history heat and power has been produced from wood, forest
and agricultural residues and organic wastes. However technology now exists
to convert such biomass efficiently and conveniently. In particular modern
automatic wood heating is very common across Europe. Such systems may
be very appropriate to farms and estates where wood and other biomass
is a significant resource. This event will examine this topic in general
and within the context of a working example. As long as re-growth or replanting
takes place, an integrated wood fuel and energy production system can
be carbon neutral, provide a green image for a business, and has the added
advantage of stimulating local woodland management and economic benefits.
The venue for this event is Loyton Lodge, a shooting lodge, hotel and
conference centre which needed a more powerful system to supply heating
and hot water for the guests. Proprietor Alick Barnes will lead a visit
to the estate and describe its various enterprises, and he will show off
his 250 kW Austrian Binder boiler and explain its central role. Dr Robin
Cotton of Wood Energy Ltd, a leading biomass heating company in the UK
which supplied the boiler, will expand upon the choice and installation
of fully automatic, cost-effective biomass systems which can range from
5kW stoves to 10,000kW industrial boilers and are suitable for the smallest
home or office to the largest hospital or country estate. Mark Weathermore
of South West Wood Fuels Ltd which provides independent advice concerning
all aspects of wood heating and wood fuel supply and storage, and Sam
Whatmore will contribute information about the potential types of fuel
supplies in the region, and the general economic activity associated with
the production, processing, promotion, marketing and utilisation of wood
fuels. It is expect that participants in this event will emerge with a
clear understanding of the range of installations and fuel strategies
available as well as of the practicalities. Visit www.cla.org.uk and click on regional

2005 events
Wood4Energy Exhibition 30th September/1st October 2005.
The South West Woodburning Centre of Winkleigh Devon will be holding a
unique event, that of a Wood4Energy exhibition. The event aims to educate
and enlighten the people of the South West via displays and seminars,
as to the reasons why we should all be investigating alternate energy
sources than that of fossil based fuels such as oil, gas and coal.
There will be many government funded agencies and product suppliers on
site offering advice and details of wood derived energy solutions and
products. From woodland management schemes and ecological advisors, to
wood chip or pellet equipment and log powered boiler systems.
On display there are wood fired range cookers for hot water, central heating
and cooking, such as the Rayburn 355m, the Stanley Donard and the large
range of Wamsler who have produced wood fired cookers for over 150 years.
There are room heaters from traditional styles right through to the ultra
modern, utilizing clean burn technology, many with boiler options. It
is quite possible to design a heating system that is dual fuel, to incorporate
possibly the existing oil or gas system, linked into the wood fired boiler
which may only be required to fire once or twice a day as it could be
linked to a storage system. For those living in the town where storing
wood is not so viable, one solution may be that of wood pellet, which
allows easier delivery and storage of the pre-packed fuel and extended
refueling times with use of hopper feed technology.
The market place has seen a dramatic shift towards renewable fuels, partly
coerced by the financial pressures of ever rising oil prices and partly
by the general realization that finite fuels with harmful emissions are
not the long term energy solution. Wood is a renewable, manageable and
versatile substitute, a carbon neutral fuel which actually helps to filter
the co2 out of the environment that we all live in.
The South West Woodburning Centre by its nature believes strongly that
wood energy is a viable option, for heating and cooking there are so many
solutions that can adapt to the modern lifestyle of today's world. So
you are cordially invited to visit the Wood4Energy exhibition at Winkleigh
on Friday 30th Sept - Saturday 1st Oct to learn how to save on home energy
costs, and how to join an ever growing move towards a cleaner and sustainable
environment.
