South West Wood Fuels and Exmoor National Park are working together to encourage better management of woodland by promoting the use of wood fuelled boiler systems on Exmoor. The Fire Walk is not a painful act of running across burning hot coals but a tour of wood fuelled boilers on Exmoor being organised by SWWF.

Coppice

The woodfuel used in the boilers comes from managed forests and woodlands, coppicing, hedge thinning and burning brash. Woodland management provides sustainable fuel and a host of raw materials. The acreage of woodland and coppice needs management to increase its biodiversity. The result is the amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the trees grows – and the growth of woodland benefits not just our lungs, but provides a home and hunting ground for animals, insects and birds. Depending on how the wood is transported and processed it can be carbon neutral with the growing trees absorbing the carbon that the burning releases. The less handling and transportation the better.

The buildings are heated with a 50kW Binder boiler with underfed hearth and 2,000 litre buffer tanks. The buffer tanks make provision for high hot water demand and also allow efficient operation under low-load conditions. The fuel store and boiler house utilise an existing barn close to the main house. The wood-chip store is above ground with dimensions 4 x 4m, giving an active volume of approx. 30m3. Fuel is chipped directly into the fuel store 2-3 times per year.

Modern wood fuelled boilers can be installed in commercial and domestic properties and they burn log, wood chip, pellet and waste wood. They are proving to be reliable and controllable and are over 90% efficient.

We all know that the price of oil fluctuates, we rely on other countries to provide our fuel and it is not a renewable resource. Wood provides local income and employment and is going to be cheaper than gas or oil in the future. With heating oil at about 38p per litre the wood equivalent is around 15p there is a payback. Log, woodchip and pellet boilers cost more to install than oil or gas equivalent but there are grants available to help you out, namely the SDF grant from the Exmoor National Park and Clearskies or look on the Grants page on this website – alternatively, contact South West Wood Fuels for details.

Costs vary according to where you are, how easy it is for the fuel supplier to access and deliver the fuel, how much you are buying, how much handling the fuel has been subject to and transportation requirements. Oil costs around 38p per litre, logs £40 per tonne, woodchip about £50 per tonne, pellet at £130 per tonne (though beware as these prices may vary).

For a list of suppliers look on our hardware installers page.

We would like to thank ENP and the people who have agreed to allow us to arrange visits to their homes and premises to show their boilers. Without their support this project would not be possible.
